Strengthening the Operation of the Accommodation Facility for Unaccompanied Minors "Agios Athanasios", in Perama, Ioannina
2023 was the third year of implementation of the project - the operation and management of the facility for unaccompanied minors in Perama, Ioannina. For the third consecutive year, we managed to complete our project, offering the children a home where they will feel safe and protected and where their physical, spiritual, moral and social development will be ensured.
The facility for unaccompanied minors “Agios Athanasios” in Perama, Ioannina has capacity of 40 beneficiaries aged 12-17, this year the average age being 16.5 years old. The facility is subsidized by the National Program of the Asylum, Migration, and Integration Fund with the code 6001598. This year, in total, we hosted 87 unaccompanied minors from different countries. We welcomed 41 children from Somalia, 19 from Afghanistan, 13 from Syria, 4 from Guinea, 3 from Yemen, 3 from Palestine, 2 from DR Congo, 1 from Sierra Leone and 1 from Gambia.
The main purpose of the operation of our project “Strengthening the Operation of the Agios Athanasios Accommodation Facility for Unaccompanied Minors” is to ensure an adequate framework of protection and care, and a smooth transition to adulthood for unaccompanied minors.
Apart from housing, the following services are provided to unaccompanied minors: 1) Food 2) Interpretation services 3) Cleaning and basic hygiene services 4) Psychosocial support 5) Legal assistance 6) Medical support through referrals 7) Distribution of financial aid 8) Educational, sports and recreational activities (supportive teaching within the Facility for learning Greek and English language, 9) Awareness-raising seminars and organization of events and activities in the local community. Services are provided 24 hours a day for seven days a week by a professional and specially trained project team, including holidays and weekends, for 12 months.
As part of the activities at the facility, non-formal education activities are provided by the volunteers of the European Solidarity Corps of our organization, who are present in the facility every day on a weekly basis. At the same time, we are in daily contact with the relevant authorities for the best interest of the children.
